Comedy Week continues on TFT's Movie Quote of the Day with Office Space. This 1999 movie bombed in theaters, but established a huge following on video and DVD, where it's considered a classic by those of us working stiffs who squirrel ourselves away in a tiny cubicle while the world passes us by and Farmville beckons (although in the world of Office Space, there is no Farmville...Facebook was barely a twinkle in its creator's eye).
The movie tells the story of Peter Gibbons, an everyman employee at a software company called Ini-tech. When his work stress begins to control his life, he gets hypnotized and mellows out, shaking up the corporate world and hatching a scheme with two friends to steal money, Superman III-style.
Almost every character in the movie is instantly memorable, but it's character actor Stephen Root who makes the most of his screen time as Milton, a beleaguered, bespectacled office drone whose gently annoying nature belies a more dangerous side.
Peter learns quickly at the beginning of the movie that Milton feels he should be able to listen to the radio because, you know, that stupid Sandra gets to listen to her headphones while she's filing papers.
"I told Bill that if Sandra's going to listen to her headphones while she's filing then I should be able to listen to the radio while I'm collating. So I don't see why I should have to turn down the radio because I enjoy listening at a reasonable volume."
